Description of Work Unit

The Richardson Design Center ( RDC ) is a multi-disciplinary center, located in the College of Health and Human Sciences at CSU in Fort Collins, CO, with a mission to foster interdisciplinary creative collaboration. It serves as a design-thinking hub where students from across campus can gather to collaborate, innovate, and prototype creative ideas in formal and informal learning spaces using state-of-the art equipment and technology. The RDC has: 4 studio/lab classrooms for hands-on learning, 1 seminar room for use by professional staff, 1 small dedicated project rooms that can also be used for student teams and visiting designers-in-residence, 2 computer labs, a design exchange (for student presentations, gallery exhibitions, special lectures and events, etc.), an ideation lab (including virtual reality equipment), prototyping lab (laser cutters, 3d printers, CNC textile equipment, etc), metal shop (traditional metalworking tools, welding, as well as state-of-the-art CNC milling machinery), and a wood shop (traditional woodworking hand and power tools as well as a large (4’x8’) CNC router).

The CSU Spur campus, located at the National Western Center in Denver, Colorado houses three buildings focused on water, food and agriculture, human and animal health, and sustainability. Within the Spur buildings, CSU conducts research and convenes experts from around the globe; students of all ages engage with science and have opportunities for exploratory learning, transforming their thinking about food, water, and health, and the careers available in these fields; and partners join in programming the space and bring evolving content to the year-round campus.

Position Summary

This position will be responsible for design thinking engagement in two locations:

The Nancy Richardson Design Center ( RDC ), located in Fort Collins, CO; and at the Spur Campus in Denver, CO.

In Fort Collins, this position will be responsible for further building and scaling the presence, program, and relationships in the K12 space across the Fort Collins community and the greater Colorado region. They will be expected to plan and run design thinking community workshops and support regular academic courses during the academic year and summer.

At Spur, this position will be responsible for building and scaling the RDC’s design thinking presence, program, and relationships. They will be expected to plan and run design thinking community workshops and other community-engaged activities on weekdays and some evenings and weekends. They will also be responsible for the supervision and coordination of our makers/fabrication space located within The Shop and are expected to aid in fostering new relationships and opportunities in K-12, while growing community support and engagement for existing initiatives, programs, and relationships. They will also be responsible for logistics and implementation of the program’s developed.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work independently on assigned projects and collaborate and lead small teams. They must be outgoing and willing to engage with people of all ages from the community. While at Spur, this person is responsible for and must be committed to the safety of all lab users.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a human services or STEM -related field

  • Design Thinking knowledge and skills

  • Ability to develop or teach design thinking in formal or informal settings

  • Experience in an academic or public fabrication lab/shop setting

  • Ability to move equipment, materials, or tools weight 30 lbs. with or without assistance

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field and/or graduate credentials in Design Thinking

  • Instructional/training experience with k-12.

  • Instructional/training experience with university learners

  • Experience with digital fabrication equipment, such as a laser cutter, 3D printer, and plotter

  • Experience with fabric equipment, such as sewing machines and fabric printing (including dye sublimation and direct-to-cloth).

  • Experience with relevant software: Microsoft applications: Word, Teams, and Excel, Adobe applications: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Lightroom, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, EnRoute, RhinoCAM, Versa Works, UCP , Slic3r, and PreForm

  • Committed to safety, quality, demonstrated excellent customer service and professionalism

  • Demonstrated experience collaborating on teams with a track record of achieving established goals and objectives

  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive critical feedback

  • Capable of effectively documenting program accomplishments, record keeping, and inventory management

  • Ability to exhibit confidence and competence in public speaking settings for the purposes of workshops, trainings, instruction, and lab tours.

Essential Duties

Job Duty CategorySpur Lab Coordination

Duty/Responsibility

  • Ensure lab safety rules, best practices, and procedures are followed by all users

  • Assist in developing entrepreneurial efforts for lab funding support.

  • Assist with lab finances through monitoring of expenditures, including purchasing, organization, and storage of lab consumables (supplies and materials), material sales, income from workshops, and other sources.

  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and staff to support instructional needs related to use of the labs, including advising on how to integrate digital fabrication into curriculum and coordinating materials, preparation and time schedules for all tasks required to prepare facilities for specific course needs.

  • Provide users with assistance in the development and execution of desired projects.

  • Assist in developing and implementing an inventory system for recording and tracking materials, consumables, and equipment replacement components

  • Identify appropriate sources for materials and equipment from suppliers, and assist with ordering supplies.

  • Assist with maintenance, testing, and repair of hand tool, power tools, and machinery in the labs to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and safety.

  • Provide support and trouble-shooting for a diverse range of fabrication platforms

  • Develop and implement a regular maintenance and service schedule for lab equipment.

  • Engage in recruitment and development activities, including guided tours and demonstrations of facilities and equipment.

  • Keep up-to-date on state-of-the-art developments in design and fabrication, including materials, hardware, software, machinery and processes.

  • Develop and keep up-to-date safety and training manuals and procedures.

  • Provide instruction in the safe and correct use of hand and power tools and equipment for students and faculty.

  • In coordination with Spur Education staff, identify new potential partner school districts and develop lasting relationships to offer design thinking k-12 programming.

  • Assist RDC Director and staff in development, management, and expansion of broader k-12 strategy for design thinking.

  • Maintain and expand existing partnership opportunities among partnered schools, communities, and K12 education professionals.

  • When appropriate, create, administer, and maintain professional development opportunities for k-12 teachers across Colorado.

  • Develop and implement teacher and student support materials.

  • Attend evening and weekend community events hosted by Spur (e.g., Second Saturdays.)

  • Support primary instructor to co-teach introductory design thinking courses, digital design + fabrication for-credit courses in the Design Thinking Program(s).
