THE POSITION

Are you seeking to advance your epidemiology career and help create a healthy Pennsylvania for all? Join the Department of Health (DOH) in this professional Epidemiologist position! With our Division of Environmental Health Epidemiology team, you will apply your consultative, scientific, and technical expertise to analyze environmental and epidemiologic data and develop solutions that ensure environmental justice and health equity. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This Epidemiologist position functions as part of the environmental epidemiology team, applying the principles of epidemiology and biostatistics to environmental and occupational health data in order to prevent and control illnesses resulting from harmful environmental or occupational exposures. In this position, you will analyze data and maintain surveillance on illnesses and health conditions caused by factors ranging from pesticides and heavy metals to biological hazards. Responsibilities include initiating epidemiologic investigations, developing protocols to assist with data collection and analysis, and assessing environmental health risks and outcomes for applied environmental public health practice.

Your work is essential to provide health outcome data evaluation, cancer data analysis, and technical assistance on epidemiological methods and investigations to other programs within the division and in cooperation with federal, state, and local agencies. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Possession of either a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in epidemiology, Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO), Dental Surgery/Medicine (DDS/DDM/DMD), or Veterinary Medicine (DVM); AND two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system;or

  • Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in a biological science such as biology, genetics, nursing or virology; AND either a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or Master of Science (MS) degree in epidemiology; AND two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system.

    Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement (https://www.employment.pa.gov/Additional%20Info/Pages/default.aspx) is currently waived for this title.
